Fly Fishing Knots

Now that we have spoken about the Fly Rod , the Fly Reel and the Fly Line, let's get to, how to attach the fly line to the leader, then the tippet and ultimately the fishing fly. The reason why this components are so important is to present the fly in such a way that it attracts the fish!

Fly Fishing Knots

It is essential to learn how to tie sufficient knots in order to handle most of the situations that you may counter in your quest for catching fish on a fly. Here are couple of the knots used mostly.

The Nail Knot - Normally you will find that there is a small loop attached to the front end of the fly line, but often you will need to insert this loop yourself.

Begin by attaching a length of 10kg monofilament line to the front (end) of the fly line, the most used knot for this is the nail knot.

Once the monofilament line is nail knotted to the fly line, the butt loop can be tied into this line using a figure of eight loop knot. This butt loop is normally placed +_ 10cm away from the tip of the fly line.

With this loop now attached, you simply join the new leader to it with e patent-pending technology simple to use. Small and lightweight to keep on the waa standard "double" loop.

Leaders

This is the length of tapered nylon between the fly line and the tippet. The purpose of the leader is twofold. Firstly it enables the fly to be attached to a fine line that holds the fly and is normally invisible to the fish.

Secondly, it enables good presentation because the leader unrolls cleanly and straight at the end of the cast. Note: You can buy tapered leaders with a loop attached to already, but if you are in a situation that you must cut and tie it to the fly line, use the abovementioned method.

Tippets

At the end of the leader you will now tie on the last length of line know as the tippet. As a general rule, use the finest tippet you can, and as a rule of thumb in order to determine the diameter of the tippet, do the following: Divide the fly size by four, then add one. (e.g. Fly size 12 divided by 4=3 add 1, =4x size tippet) That it !
